Inside the Kruger Kitchen: Embracing Colour, Character & Comfort

When I first sat down with the client for the Kruger Kitchen, the brief was clear: she wanted something fresh, bright, and functional — but she wasn’t quite sure how to get there. Like many people, her first instinct was to go all white. Clean, simple, timeless. But after chatting through ideas and exploring a few possibilities together, we landed on something much more exciting: a kitchen that still feels timeless, but with softness, colour and personality at its core.

We began with colour consultation and design direction, leaning into a palette that felt true to the client’s style — baby blue kitchen panelling paired with crisp white cabinetry, warm silver hardware, and a beautiful mixed-tone blue subway tile splashback that added depth and dimension to the space. A white countertop kept everything fresh and breezy, while the colour choices gave it heart.

To balance the cool tones, we brought in rattan and timber elements — think warm pendant lighting, organic textures and natural warmth to offset the crispness of the cabinetry. The result: a soft take on Hampton style, with a relaxed, coastal mood.

The client has a deep love for pink (especially when paired with blue), so we planned to introduce blush tones through the styling phase. Pink Smeg appliances were top of the wishlist — and they delivered on every level. We paired them with pink planters, tonal tea towels, and subtle touches layered throughout to bring the look together.

Lighting played a key role in creating a layered, inviting feel. Alongside the rattan pendants, we styled in a salt lamp and a warm-toned kitchen lamp — softening the space and giving it a welcoming, lived-in atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

Styling is still in progress — but that’s the beauty of it. Good styling evolves. It’s about layering slowly and intentionally over time, finding those perfect pieces that add charm and meaning. The Kruger Kitchen is a beautiful example of how a little colour, texture and personality can completely transform a space.
